Triple Play for Battery

The California Energy Commission isn't the only US agency working on Battery Charger System (BCS) energy efficiency standards. The US Department of Energy (DoE) has been working on their own version and recently held a day-long stakeholder's meeting to discuss, and to receive feedback on, their proposed approach.
While the DoE and CEC programs harmonize on a BCS test method, there are significant differences in their coverage and methodology:
  • Product range: the DoE is focused on devices that charge batteries for consumer products only, while the CEC plans to cover consumer and non-consumer BCSs.
  • Product grouping: The CEC groups BCSs into two groups, small (single- phase input, ≤2kW) and large (single and three-phase, >2kW). The DoE is proposing a more complicated grouping scheme comprising of ten product classes, depending on battery voltage and battery energy
  • Energy efficiency metrics: While both standards incorporate active (charge), maintenance, and no-battery energy consumption modes, they calculate the maximum allowable power consumption levels differently.
